It Takes a Village.....

Direct Aid Nepal began with our founder going to Nepal with Carol Buckley to work on a project for government elephants.  While there she met  three elephants and they became the core of Direct Aid Nepal's work and the first elephants that were retired to their chain free corrals.  Samrat Gaj a baby bull, his mother Srijana Kali, and now her best friend Champa Kali were the first elephants retired by DAN.    They were residents of Sapana Village Lodge (SVL).

Dhruba Giri the General Manager of SVL is a special man.  He is forward thinking.  We kept negotiating; working together for the common goal of elephant welfare and what role SVL would have.  Success.  He provided the land; a precious commodity in Sauraha and we provided the infrastructure for the elephants and their support staff.  The result was a sanctuary for the elephants and a place for guests to see elephants in a natural surrounding.
